Gastroscopy and colonoscopy during a Korean health check-up
Upper endoscopy and colonoscopy are commonly offered in Korean comprehensive screening programs. They require more preparation than blood tests or ultrasound and can affect the timing of your check-up and travel.
Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It may be performed without sedation, or with sedation depending on the program and patient. If an abnormality is identified, biopsy may be recommended.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy requires bowel preparation before the examination. Important questions:
- When should bowel preparation start?
- Which preparation product is used?
- Which regular medications should be adjusted?
- Will sedation be used?
- Can polyps be removed during the same procedure?
- If a polyp is removed, when is flying or strenuous activity permitted?
Sedation
If sedation is used:
- you may need an escort
- driving is generally inappropriate afterward
- same-day work or major decisions may not be advisable
- the hospital's individual instructions should take priority
Anticoagulants and diabetes medication
Do not stop prescription medication on your own. Tell the hospital in advance if you take:
- anticoagulants
- antiplatelet medication
- insulin
- diabetes medication
- GLP-1-based medication
- other drugs that affect fasting or procedures
