Cancer screening in Korea: choose tests by cancer risk, not by package size
Cancer-focused screening is a common component of comprehensive check-ups at major Korean hospitals. The appropriate tests depend on age, sex, smoking history, family history, previous polyps or abnormal imaging, hepatitis status, and other risk factors.
Stomach cancer
Gastroscopy is commonly included in Korean comprehensive screening because stomach cancer has historically been an important screening target in Korea. Ask whether sedation is used, whether biopsy is included if a lesion is found, whether Helicobacter pylori testing is relevant, and whether pathology and English results can be provided.
Colorectal cancer
Possible approaches include stool testing and colonoscopy. Colonoscopy requires bowel preparation and may require sedation. If a polyp is removed, the visit becomes more than a simple screening test and follow-up instructions are important.
Breast cancer
Depending on age and breast characteristics: mammography, breast ultrasound, and additional imaging if indicated.
Cervical / gynecologic screening
Programs may include cervical cytology and selected pelvic or gynecologic evaluation depending on the hospital and patient profile.
Lung cancer
Low-dose CT may be appropriate for selected high-risk smokers or former smokers. It is not a universal test for every healthy adult.
Liver cancer
People with chronic hepatitis B/C or cirrhosis may need a different surveillance pathway than a general screening package.
Prostate cancer
PSA and urologic evaluation may be discussed based on age, symptoms, family history and preferences.
Avoid a “test everything” mindset
Over-screening can produce incidental findings, repeat imaging, biopsies and anxiety without clear benefit.
