Cancer Care & Second Opinion
Imaging shows where the disease is; pathology explains what it is
Mammography, ultrasound and MRI answer different questions, and imaging should be reviewed together with pathology. Original DICOM files are preferable to screenshots or photos of films because clinicians need to review the full image set.
Imaging review may ask
- Is the abnormality confined to one area?
- Are there additional suspicious lesions?
- Are lymph nodes suspicious?
- Has the opposite breast been assessed?
- Do imaging and biopsy findings match?
Pathology and biomarkers
The pathology report may include tumour type and grade, while biomarker assessment can include estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and HER2. Additional testing depends on the case.
