Clinic (의원) or hospital? Almost always the clinic
Korea splits primary care across small single-specialty clinics — 의원 — and reserves hospitals for referrals, surgery and emergencies. For a fever, sore throat, sprain, rash, stomach upset or eye irritation, a clinic will see you faster, cost less, and often needs no appointment. Going to a large hospital for those usually means a longer wait and a higher bill for the same treatment.
Pick the specialty, not the symptom
There is rarely a general practitioner to triage you. You choose the specialty yourself: internal medicine (내과) for fever, flu and stomach problems, ENT (이비인후과) for throat, ear and sinus, orthopedics (정형외과) for back, joint and injury, ophthalmology (안과) for eyes, obstetrics and gynaecology (산부인과) for women's health, urology (비뇨의학과) for urinary symptoms. Foreign-patient registration is the part that goes wrong
Every clinic Kordy lists is registered with the Korean government to receive foreign patients, which is what makes reception straightforward without a Korean resident registration number. Clinics outside that system can still treat you, but registration takes longer and payment is handled differently. This is the single most common reason a walk-in visit stalls at the front desk.
Paying without Korean insurance
Without National Health Insurance you pay the full fee, which for a routine clinic visit in Seoul is usually modest by US or European standards; prescriptions are filled at a separate pharmacy nearby.
